Here follows a list of all the characters named in the text who have any importance. A few of them, as has been mentioned, are based on characters from The Lord of the Rings. These are indicated by names in square brackets.

 

AGLARIEL     Queen of the Elves of Midyard during the Long Age and the Age of Wizards  [Galadriel]

ALDRED     see Sherling

ALFIR     Youngest of the three sons of Athelstan, King of Enaderth. Later becomes king himself       

ALQUESSIEL     An unmarried lady of Vinya-Ruminas. Sister of Miriel

ALROD   A Canon or senior priest of the Temple of Vinya-Ruminas

AMARANTH    Eldest daughter-in-law of Caradoc Yarnal

AR     Short form of Ar-Hostakyermo, the High Priest of the Temple of Vinya-Ruminas;

               his personal name is Rudhol (Ruddle)

ARLOTH     A wealthy and powerful unmarried lady of Vinya-Ruminas                           

ASULDO (recent historical character)     Tenth King of Thandor. Usurped throne of Olostur II     

ATAN     Short form of Atan-Hostakyermo, Second Highest Priest of the Temple; his

                    personal name is Pureor

ATHELSTAN    Second son of Guthreo, Swin's younger uncle; King of Enaderth

AULAND   the Smith of the Gods. Estranged husband of Yavanna.  [Aulë in The Silmarillion]

AYARG     The chief of a gang of bandits

ÆLFRIC (fictional character)     King of the Elves in The Tale of Waltrot  [Elrond]

 

BARANITHRON (historical character)     the sixth and last of the Wizards (see Brown, Mr.) 

BARTROB     The Reeve of Punchkinland - a sort of commissar or district governor 

BAVOUR, Clemo    An elderly punchkin of wealthy and distinguished family  [Bilbo]
BENTLEY, short for Bentliman     young son of Goodwort Gough 
BENTLIMAN, see Gough
BERMA     also known as Calendis or the Gulwen: the Good Witch of the North
BERVEN     A deacon or assistant priest, employed by Erum in the mission to the Foro
BILLING     One of the Ten Knights, originally retainers of King Athelstan, commanded by him
                          to follow Swin 
BOTTLEBANKS, Tim   A punchkin-servant
BRÓIN (fictional character)     A dwarf. Servant and companion of Elbo Doggends in The   
                                                      Tale of Waltrot
BROWN, Mr.     A Wizard, disenchanted by Fuindis from fox's shape; identified by the High
                               Priest, and previously by Aldred, as Baranithron  [Radagast]  
BROWNLOCK, Mrs.     Landlady of The Cap and Feather
BRYD, full name Bryd Svarriambat Ammasdaughter     A women of the Foro, taken captive
                 by Ayarg, then helped by Swin and the Punchkins; later found at Caras Gulwen
                 in the service of Fuindis
BRYDDA     A maid of Garholt; seduced and abandoned by Swin

CALESSAR     Third son of Olostur II: Swin's father

CARAHIR and CARANETH     Twin babies; son and daughter of Lady Vornis

CRABANIR     Captain of the Arostiri or Palace Guard. Son of Lord Megiluin 
CULURIEL (historical character)    A queen of Thandor. Wife of Olostur II

CURUOR (historical character)     Chief of the Aulendili, the Smiths and Artificers, during the 
                     reigns of Kedral III and Kedrahil II. Architect of the Treaty of Lhygost
 
DAERANNA     A noble lady of Thandor; wife of Lord Lefnui
DIMORN (legendary/historical character)     Lover of Nendorel  [Amroth] 
DOGGENDS, see Elbo 
DRENG     A man of the Foro: Bryd's husband
DRU   Thandorian name for the Supreme Being. [Eru Iluvatar] Identified by Swin as the 
                same as...
DRYHTEN     The chief deity among the tribes of the Nibyth. Also DRYHTEN-SWEALD,
                            DRYHTEN-METOD 
DULINIR     Eldest of the three sons of Athelstan, King of Enaderth 
DYER, see Fortinbras, Hrothgar, etc.
 
EANGIL (legendary/historical character)     A famous mariner of the Long Age  [Ëarendil/Elendil] 
EDHANC     A palace guardsman employed by the Temple authorities

FËARUK THE WHITE     The Dragon of Northern Thandor 
FEIMA     A young woman in the service of Lady Arloth, in Ruminas; later in the service of Miriel,
                      in Emynos 
FERUMBRAS DYER     Present head of the Dyer family. Also known as Ferumbras VII 
FINDIR     An Elf: a wandering minstrel and intelligence-gatherer   
FORTINBRAS DYER    Son of Ferumbras, and so a present-day descendent of...
FORTINBRAS the Dyer (historical character)    Famous hero of the Punchkins [Bilbo/Frodo]
FORTINBRAS VI (recent historical character)    Another descendent of Fortinbras the Dyer.

HENCHMAN, Aubrey     A Punchkin involved in the rebellion led by Hodgekin Dyer 
HEODEN     One of the Ten Knights: the eldest, and the steward of Swin's treasury   
HILDERINC     A man of Garholt; father of Brydda
HODGE, HODGEKIN, see Hrothgar Dyer
HOLM     the God of the Sea. Lover and second husband of Yavanna  [Ulmo in The Silmarillion]
HOLMO (fictional character)     the prince in Talathiel's story of the Frog and the Snail 
HREM     An explorer and oil-prospector 
HRIVEOR     A wicked lord of Thandor
HROTHGAR DYER    A mysterious Punchkin-rover, related to Fortinbras Dyer;
                                        later identified as his half-brother
HYGD     A woman of Garholt; mother of Brydda  
 
ILYIRME     A young unmarried lady of Ruminas
INGOLMO (fictional/mythical character)     A talking snail in Talathiel's story; also appears
                                                                            in the Dreginiabeth           
 
JACK (fictional character)     appears in the Ballad of Dunbury Down, sung by Swin. He is
                                                presumably based on...
JACK DYER (recent historical character)   One of the two Punchkins who stole the sacred
                         fruit from the Tree in the temple of Vinya-Ruminas  
 
KEDRAHIL I (historical character)    Second king of Thandor. Son of Kedral I
KEDRAHIL II (historical character)     Eighth king of Thandor. Son of Kedral III    
KEDRAL I (important historical character)    King of Turmal, the south-kingdom. Came to    
                      throne after defeating Sorgrim. Was helped by Fortinbras the Dyer. Later 
                      refounded the Northern Realm as the Kingdom of Thandor, so becoming 
                      its first first king  [Aragorn]
KEDRAL II (historical character)     Fourth king of Thandor    
KEDRAL III FORMENDACIL (historical character)     Seventh king of Thandor. Grandson of 
                         Keldur. Fought the first wars against the Dragon and was slain by him
KELDUR (historical character)     Fifth king of Thandor. Elder brother of Olostur I
KEMENDIL     King of Thandor at some future date. His doings are set forth in the Book of
                             the Acts of Kemendil; he is also recognised in the dedication of Aldred's second
                             narrative, Light and Darkness        
 
LAMMANWE     An advocate. First appears, without being named, in Chapter Seven of Book One 
LEFNUI     A lord of Thandor; also his father, now deceased, with the same name 
LEGO (fictional character)     A loremaster. Appears in The Tale of Waltrot
 
MAEWIEL     Elvish princess; later Queen of the Elves of Midyard
MAGTHA     Swin's mother. Daughter of Guthreo and wife of Calessar 
MALINDE     Former Queen of the Elves. Mother of Maewiel
MANDATE, see Mindir
MARBAUG     One of the 'Gods' or angelic powers: the Lord of Doom (identified with Fate)
                              and the Lord of the Dead.  [Mandos in The Silmarillion]
MAUL     the Dwarves' name for Auland, their patron deity  
MEGILUIN     A powerful lord of Thandor
MELDA     Junior member of Ayarg's gang: a catamite. Later employed in the Temple and
                       rapidly promoted
MELOHTAR     A young lord of Thandor. Son of Ostendil and husband of Princess Gauriel.
                              Later, on Gauriel's accession to the throne, Prince Consort 
METOD, see Dryhten
MINDIR     Chief of the 'Gods' or angelic powers. God of Law and Justice. Called 'Mandate'
                       by the Punchkins.  [Manwë in The Silmarillion]  
MIRIEL     An unmarried lady of Ruminas. Sister of Alquessiel
MORNI     An old bitch, Sedro's dam, belonging to Atan the Second Highest Priest
 
NABBI     A venerable Dwarf: chief of the Dwarf-colony of Ruminas 
NENDOREL     Original name of Calendis/Fuindis/Berma  [Nimrodel]
NIAMAS     Native name of Culuriel, wife of King Olostur II
NOMETH     Princess of Thandor, daughter of King Oresgal; the Lady Magistrate of  
                          Ruminas. Renamed 'Gauriel' by Berma after her marriage, and the name is
                          subsequently used by everyone 
 
OLOSTUR I (important historical character)   Sixth king of Thandor. Younger brother of 
                         Keldur. Founder of the great Temple of Ruminas, the Erumar     
OLOSTUR II (recent historical character)    Ninth king of Thandor. Slain by Asuldo the Usurper
ORESGAL    Present (and eleventh) king of Thandor. Son of Asuldo
OSTENDIL     A lord of Thandor. Father of Melohtar and Lord Chief Steward of Ruminas
OSWINE     One of the Ten Knights
 
PROUDFOOT, Egwise    Mayor of Middleton, the chief town of Punchkinland
 
QUENDIL     The Lord Chamberlain's scribe: a middle-ranking palace official
QUENDIL (historical character)     A powerful lord of the Elves  [Elrond, again]
 
RISTILA     A young woman in the service of Lady Arloth, in Ruminas
RUDDLE     Nickname of the High Priest of the Temple in Ruminas: see Ar
 
SADRON     The Chief Librarian of the Library in the royal palace, in Ruminas
SARVAD     A captain or regimental commander in Lord Lefnui's service  
SEDRO     A black hound belonging to Lord Melohtar
SHEAF     One of the Ten Knights: a favourite of King Athelstan 
SHERLING, Aldred    A Punchkin. Narrator of the story
SIGEHERE     One of the Ten Knights: Swin's standard-bearer
SISILAS     An unmarried lady of Ruminas
SMITH, Odo (recent historical character)     One of the two Punchkins who stole the sacred
                          fruit from the Tree in the temple of Vinya-Ruminas 
SORGRIM (historical character)    Evil sorceror and artificer who flourished during 
                      the Long Age  [Sauron/Saruman]
SORONDUR     Chief Priest of the church of Emynos; later, during the beginning of the reign of
                               Kemendil, High Priest of the Temple in Ruminas   
SORQUID     Lieutenant of the Palace Guard  
STAFFAL (historical character)     A good wizard  [Gandalf]
