2.  A SHORT CHRONOLOGY OF THANDOR

 

 


 

Year One of Thandor is the date of Kedral’s first northward progress, during which he founded Emynos (Dunbury) and planned the restoration of old Amruminas. This year corresponds with year 2667 of the Age of Wizards, which reckoning continued to be used in the South. The Thandorian calendar came into use during the first estrangement of Thandor and Turmal, and was officially adopted by Olostur I: hence known as ‘King’s Reckoning’.

 

Year 1. King Kedral makes his first progress north.

             In recognition of the services rendered to his cause by the Punchkins he publishes a Decree, permitting them to govern themelves under their own laws under the full protection of the Northern Realm. The name ‘Thandor’ at once comes into general use.

 

[ ?? c. 40 – 60. Yabeth takes up her abode below Erynvorn.]

 

c. 20 – 120. Migrations from Undor. Tribes move east into Enaderth, mingle with the coast-dwelling peoples or Falagwaith, and become more prosperous.  c. 100 The Dwarves of the Black Mountains divide, and begin northward and southward migrations.

 

51. Birth of Kedrahil son of Kedral.

 

c. 60 – 100.  Attacks of monsters in Enaderth. These peter out, and by the time of Kedrahil’s kingship are no more than a memory.

 

c. 100. Yabeth begins to exert a benign influence.

 

102. The Demesne reaps the first of a series of record harvests.

 

105. The Tree of Turmal bears a fruit. Kedral entrusts it to Kedrahil, who bears it to Vinya-Ruminas. Kedrahil hallows a sward and plants the fruit. A new sapling begins to grow.

 

121. Death of Kedral; accession of Kedrahil.

 

135 – 139. Kedrahil attempts to survey his whole Kingdom. 138 He explores Daelum, finding it barren and unworthy of attention.

 

[ ? c. 170 – 200. Nendorel returns from the far South. Pledges herself to Yabeth and founds Caras Gulwen.]

 

210 – 270. New colonies in Thandor. 228 The Nibyth cross the River Malog. 250 Kelohtar annexes the Pelduin.

 

c. 250. Beginning of great expansion of trade and industry in Turmal.

 

255. The Bleck Vale region is added to the Demesne by gift of Kedral II.

 

[ ? c. 300 – 350. Elenhir the Elven-king founds Metimal, in honour of the legendary Metimalonde, as port and capital of the new elf-kingdom, Tolmoth. Many Elves sail eastward and depart, but of those who remain, many children are born. Numbers remain steady.]

 

308. Battle of the North Downs. Thereafter Keldur Alcarin maintains peace throughout the North for over 100 years.

 

339. Foundation of the Smiths’ Guild, the Aulendili, in Ruminas.

 

400. Keldur settles permanently in the South. His brother Olostur holds the regency of the North. Olostur promotes the development of organised religion in Ruminas.

 

415. Reformation of the Orondili (tree-keepers), henceforth known as the Priesthood.

 

423. Death of Keldur. Olostur is crowned in Emynos as monarch of the entire realm. Olostur lays the foundation stone of the Erumar in Ruminas, which he adopts as his capital.

 

439. Ervon, the new regent of the South, assumes the crown of Turmal. The North and the South are split into separate kingdoms. Olostur makes no move to reclaim the South.

 

482. The Tree of Ruminas bears a fruit.

 

483. Completion and consecration of the Erumar. Theft of the fruit by the Punchkins. Appearance of Fëaruk. Emynos burned.

 

487. Battle of Lake Aduchel. Death of Kedral III; accession of Kedrahil II.

 

487 – 497. Years of Attrition. Rise of the Aulendili. Thandor becomes dependant on the Demesne for food.

 

? c. 494. The Priests and the Aulendili invoke the ghost of Sorgrim.

 

497. Treaty of Lhygost concluded by Fëaruk and Kedrahil II.

 

507. Death of Kedrahil II. 507 – 525 Smiths’ Regency. Rise of the Barons.

 

515. The Orbs of Vigilance are brought up from the depths of Aduchel.

 

525. Accession of Olosotur II. 535 First of his pilgrimages. 543 He marries Niamas of the Falgwaith.

 

552. Birth of Calessar, father of Kemendil.

 

c. 580. King Elenhir and Queen Malinde, having become aware of the industrial menace of Thandor, hand over their Kingdom to their daughter, Princess Maewiel, and depart. She becomes Queen Falastari.

 

582. Fëaruk treacherously attacks Ruminas. Deaths of Niamas and her household. Flight of Calessar. Usurpation of Ardan Asuldo. Death of Olostur II. Calessar is received at Garholt and weds Magtha, daughter of Guthreo, at midsummer.

 

583. Death of Calessar.

        On the advice of Calendis (Nendorel) Maewiel rides west, seeking a mortal for a husband. She espouses Athelstan and returns with him to Enaderth. Athelstan takes Bridburg as his capital.

        Birth of Magtha’s son Eofor, later known as Swin.

 

590. Asuldo twice invades the Demesne.

 

591. Asuldo prepares a third expedition but dies of a fit. Accession of Oresgal.

 

594. First plague year. Bryd leaves the Pelduin.

 

596. Persuaded by the ghost of Sorgrim, the Aulendili break one of the Orbs of Vigilance.

 

598. Great Plague year. Melohtar journeys to Garholt and is welcomed by Guthreo.

 

607. The warden of Beraid Moreithel warns Ruminas that the oil-fields are depleted. Bands of prospectors are sent to survey the unknown regions.

 

611. Melohtar notices ‘Ninniachlo’. Oil is found there.

 

612. Surveying epeditions are sent into the Lowerath, Daelum and the Harluin Mountains. The Ninniachlo surveyors cross the Rediath and trespass into the realm of Athelstan. They are slain by the Elves.

 

613. The Aldermoot sends an Embassy to Dunbury, identifying it wrongly as ‘Vinyards’. The Embassy arrives in Ruminas and presents its petition to King Oresgal. Disastrous outcome of marriage between Melohtar and Princess Nometh. Swin killed by Fëaruk. Lefnui and Melohtar lead a band of colonists into Daelum.

 

614. Battle of Bigginton. Disenchantment of Gauriel. Death of Oresgal; accession of Gauriel as Queen. Settlement of Daelum. Return of Eofor. Death of Fëaruk. Battles of Belechel Ford and Ruminas. Death of the Queen’s Consort. Eofor is crowned as Kemendil I and weds Gauriel. Beginning of New Dispensation of the Temple. Visit of Eagle.

 

615. Birth of Guthreo, first son of Kemendil and Gauriel.

        Aldred orders cultivation of tobacco in the Demesne.

 

622. King Araxor of Turmal attacks Doroech. Kemedil goes to the assistance of Queen Ides. Thandor wins battles of Garholt Fields, Selagend and Harlad. During the third battle Kemendil is drenched with liquid fire from a war-engine of Turmal. He fights on and dies at the moment of victory. Araxor retreats and sues for peace. Dreng, though wounded, conducts negotiations. Queen Ides honours him on his return. Aldred is confirmed as Regent of Thandor, Gauriel refusing the throne. Aldred receives the red purse. Thereafter he smokes incessantly, keeping his tobacco in the purse.

 

623. Civil disorder in Turmal. Murder of Araxor. Five kings in one year. Aldred re-opens the wells of Ninniachlo.

 

624. The Senate of Turmal petition Aldred that the land be received into the realm and governance of Thandor. Aldred becomes supreme ruler of Thandor and Turmal. Ides acknowledges him as her overlord. Tribes of Undor and Mithlaid sue for vassalage.

 

629. Findir comes to Ost-en-Aderthad as a minstrel and sings the Dreginiabeth to King Alfir.

 

640. Guthreo comes of age. Aldred resigns the empire to him. Guthreo is crowned as Kemendil II. His reign seems very likely to be the longest and most prosperous since that of Kedral I.

 

649. Death of Aldred, from blood-spitting and sickness of the lungs.

 

651. Death of Gauriel the Queen Mother.

 

653. Athelstan, third son of Kemendil I, awakens and marries Brydda, the enchanted maid of Garholt.
